The Lasik Procedure

The Lasik procedure involves more than simply shooting lasers at the eye to in turn, get clear vision. While the procedure is relatively quick and painless there are many things to do to prepare for the surgery and to expect during and afterwards.

The first step to the Lasik procedure is to be counseled by the eye care professional and surgeon. Various vision tests will be performed to determine if the individual is a candidate for surgery. The Lasik procedure takes less than a half an hour in total length including preparation, the surgery itself and recovery. The patient will be given oral medications to promote relaxation and numbing eye drops.

The patient will then lie down on their back while the laser equipment is place into place. A lid speculum will be used to hold the eye lids open preventing blinking and fluttering. A special ring is used to help stabilize the eye. When the ring is place into position, pressure is applied and vision is diminished. The microkeratome, or cutting tool, is used at this time to cut a flap in the surface of the eye. Once the flap is cut, the ring and microkeratome are removed and vision is restored.

The next step in the Lasik procedure is when the laser is place into place. At this time, the surgeon will instruct the patient to stare into a light without moving the eye. The light is provided to give an area to focus on while the laser corrects the refractive error.

It is important to keep the eye focused on the light and as still as possible. However, slight fluctuations are accounted for with the latest technology and if sudden movements of the eye are made, the laser equipment is designed to shut off to prevent damage.

Once the laser portion of the Lasik procedure is finished, the flap will be replaced into its normal position and the eye will be covered with gauze or some type of patch. The flap will then take some time to heal after surgery. Special goggles are provided for nighttime use to prevent accidental rubbing of the eye.

After surgery, eyes may feel irritated, itchy or have a burning sensation. Prescription eye drops are provided for repeat use for several days following the Lasik procedure to help promote healing and wage some relief. A prescribed pain reliever may be recommended for patients experience mild pain.

Follow up visits are an important part of the Lasik procedure. In most cases, several rechecks are needed over the following weeks to help ensure that the eye is healing and vision is improving. An immediate improvement in vision is often a result but over the next several months, vision can continue to improve.

The Lasik procedure is quick and relatively painless. For what little pain may be experienced after the procedure, for many it is worth it to be rewarded with clear vision. As you think back to the night or the nights before you’re horrified to think of all the high fat, high calorie foods you ate, not to mention the alcohol.

What now?

You have 3 choices:

1. Wake up and do it all over again by starting the day with a big fry up.

2. Starve yourself all day hoping to equilibrise it all out

3. Be sensible and apply the rules for alteration control.

There’s really only one choice: DAMAGE CONTROL

Here’s what to do if you want to get back on track and ensure that you’re not ending the holidays by having place on the extra pounds that will take the beginning of the new year to take off.

Step 1: Have breakfast - This is the best way to give your metabolism a kick start. People who take breakfast tend to snack less on unhealthy snacks. Include accelerator as part of your healthy breakfast as accelerator takes more energy to digest. Make sure to drink atleast 1 litre for every 50lbs of body weight. The old 8 glasses a day doesn’t work for everyone as we’re all different sizes. It makes sense that the smaller you are the less water and vice versa. If you find drinking water difficult then try having herbal teas such as peppermint or chamomille, or try adding slice of lemon to your glass.

Step 4 - Get Moving - You’ve done an excellent job carbo loading the day before now it’s time to burn those calories! The best way to do this is with a bit of interval training. Choose an activity you enjoy either jogging, skipping,or getting on the cross trainer. Warm up for 5 minutes then increase your intensity to about 85% of your maximum effort, do 20 seconds at high intensity with 10 seconds slow. Do this for 10 minutes or as close to 10 as you can get, finish with a 5 minute cool down. In just 20 minutes you’ll be sweating and feeling great!

Jock itch is an irritating itch that shows no signs of going away. It only seems to be getting worse. Not only does it itch but appears to be red and scaly with raised edges. To make matters worse, it is in a delicate spot that you really don’t want to discuss with just anyone. Don’t panic. These are classic jock itch symptoms. This is a fungal infection that usually develops in the groin area. It starts in the bend of the groin and leg area and can spread down the inner thigh. It normally never affects the penis or the scrotum.

Causes of Jock Itch

Jock itch can be caused by sweating, wearing break clothing for too long, or even transferred from your feet when putting on underwear. The groin area is the perfect place for this fungus to grow because it is a warm, moist area. In the summer, you perspire more and cannot change your clothes every time you sweat. In the winter, wearing too many layers of clothing can cause the same effect.

Symptoms of Jock Itch

The symptoms of jock itch usually start in the folds of the groin area. A small area, usually only a half inch across, that is red and can have sores in no particular pattern is the onset. It may develop a scaly appearance and have sores that ooze. The sores have raised edges and the infection can spread down the inner thighs. Itching is one of the most irritating symptoms.

How To Cure Jock Itch

Jock itch can be treated with over the counter medicines. If you are pretty sure that is what you have, you can purchase Tinactin, Lotrimin, or Micatin from your drugstore. How To Prevent Jock Itch

Always place your socks on before putting on your underwear as this reduces the spread of fungi from your feet. Try to shower after anything you do that causes you to sweat a lot. Make sure your clothes are very dry before putting them on. Do not share towels with others because this spread it quite easily. An anti-inflammatory medicine, such as ibuprofen, can cut down on the inflammation of the infected area. Try to keep this area free of moisture. Make sure you dry completely before putting on clothes. You should wear boxers and loose fitting clothing, preferably cotton.

Men and women can both get jock itch but it is more common in men. After the symptoms have been gone for one week, you can stop treatment. However, that does not mean you can never get it again. So use some precautions and you will be back to new in no time.

What Are Shingles?

Shingles is an infection that causes a painful and very uncomfortable rash. It’s scientific study is Herpes herpes and it is a neurological disease not a skin disease as most people think. It usually subsides within 3-5 weeks from appearing, and some people experience a reactivation of this condition, called herpes sine herpete, that doesn’t show any rash. It affects the nervous system with or without showing the skin rash.

It is a painful condition, but rarely a serious one. The worse complication is called post-herpetic neuralgia, which keeps the skin painful for a long period of time, sometimes even years, after the rash is gone. Zoster sine herpete, however, may have more serious complications.

What Causes Shingles?

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox - the Varicella-zoster virus. When a patient suffering from chickenpox recovers, the virus hides itself in the nerves and remains inactive for long periods of time. After several years, it can reactivate itself and cause shingles. This is the reason why shingles vaccine shots and chickenpox vaccine shots are the same. This usually happens on patients who have a malfunction on their immune system.

Only people who have had chickenpox in the past can have shingles as this condition cannot be induced. If fact, when a mortal gets the virus from a shingles-suffering patient, it develops chickenpox and not shingles.

Shingles Symptoms

Shingles start with headache and eye pain (particularly, sensitivity to strong lights); then these symptoms evolve and develop into severe itching throughout the body, chills, fever and severe pain in the areas of the skin where the rash is developing. Additionally, there may be sporadic numbness and stabbing pain in those areas of the body where the affected nerves are. The rash develop last.
